Engendering the Future:
Esperanza del Barrio's 5th Anniversary Donation Campaign
In our first five years, Esperanza has done much to help our street
vendors achieve economic justice, but we still have far to go! We
successfully lobbied to change New York City's laws to make licenses
available to our members; started thriving youth and health
programs; and above all continued to empower our community to
agitate for institutional changes that will provide economic
security for all families.
Now we are working to ensure that our members receive food pushcart
stickers, without which they risk high fines, even if they have
vending licenses. Since 1983, New York City has limited the number
of stickers to 3,000 and no more stickers will be issued until 2001.
Street vendors can be fined $1,000 for not having a sticker, and
our vendors earn less than $800 every three months from their work.
Please help us to convince City Hall to change the food pushcart
sticker law!
